Overview

NovaEditor is a desktop patch editor for the Novation MiniNova synthesizer. It gives you complete visual access to every parameter — oscillators, filters, envelopes, LFOs, effects, modulation matrix, vocoder, arpeggiator, and more — without navigating the hardware menus.

Changes are sent to the device in real time via USB-MIDI. You can also manage a library of up to 384 patches across three banks, perform full device backups and restores, and save patches to standard .syx files.

MIDI Setup

Connect the MiniNova to your computer via USB and power it on. Launch NovaEditor.

  1. In the Header, select the MiniNova port in the MIDI In dropdown.
  2. Select the same port in the MIDI Out dropdown.
  3. Click Connect. The status pill turns teal when connected.
Tip: If the MiniNova does not appear, disconnect and reconnect the USB cable, then click Connect again. Make sure no other application is using the port exclusively.

Each slot offers a Parameter dropdown with 170+ assignable targets including portamento, oscillator levels, filter parameters, envelope ADSR, LFO rate, FX levels, Arp gate/swing, and mod matrix depth slots.

Demo Mode & Licensing

Without a license, NovaEditor runs in Demo mode: full UI access, but only 5 patch operations (Read / Write / Save). Backup and Restore require a full license.

To activate: press ⌘T / Ctrl+T or click the Activate button in the footer. Enter your purchase email and serial number, then click Activate. An internet connection is required for initial activation only.

Troubleshooting

MiniNova not detected

  • Check the USB cable is firmly connected at both ends.
  • Power the MiniNova on before launching NovaEditor.
  • Quit and relaunch — MIDI ports are enumerated at startup.
  • On Windows, check that no other app holds exclusive MIDI access.

Read spinner doesn't stop

  • Verify the MIDI Out dropdown is set to the MiniNova.
  • Click Connect again to reinitialise the connection.
  • Press a key on the device to confirm bidirectional MIDI is working.

Backup / Restore is slow

Reading or writing 128 patches requires 128 SysEx transfers — a full backup takes 20–30 seconds. Do not disconnect the cable or switch patches on the device during transfer.

Activation error

  • Ensure no leading/trailing spaces in email or serial fields.
  • Email must match the purchase address exactly (case-insensitive).
  • Check your internet connection for connection errors.
  • Contact support if the problem persists.
